The ruins of Drachenfels (Dragon`s Rock) Castle, a former rock castle in Rhineland-Palatinate, near the French-German border.
The passages and rooms hewn out of the rock, through which one reaches the top of the prominent castle tower, are impressive.
The origin of the castle is unclear, but it cannot be completely ruled out that these cavities existed before and that the castle complex was built around them.
This is supported by the so-called Heidenkammern (Heathen`s Chambers) on the nearby Heidenberg (Heathen`s Mountain). There too are several rooms carved out of a rock mass at a height of 8 m. Nobody knows who created them and what they were used for. However, their naming suggests that they may have been a place of worship in the distant past.
At Drachenfels, the backs of the main tower and of another tower rock in front of it, which seem to have been cut flat over a large area, are noticeable and most likely did not form naturally in this way.
A dragon image carved into a rock face also poses a mystery, since no one knows when and by whom it was created. Some assume that it existed earlier and gave the castle its name.
